Nationwide Beauty Pageants And Evening Robe Competitions Throughout The

For many decades now pageants in general have been a great source of joy and excitement for thousands of ladies across the world. Many long time patrons and consistent supporters of pageants in general will tell you that running in pageants will afford you with self assurance, help with self esteem and provide a structure for individuals to have drive and determination for success.

Competing in Miss and Mrs pageants is a enjoyable hobby . But unfortunately it can get quite costly . The more seasoned you become and the more involved you become the higher the cost involved. If you are just starting out you can probably get a less expensive pageant dress for anywhere $300-$800 which is still a substantial investment to make. However most national pageant dresses can range in price from $1500 to as much as $4000 and above. severely beaded garments usually are what make the price be as expensive as they are . The majority of the embellishments are placed on on by hand. Therefore the pricing for those types of womens wear is rather high. Some of the attachments that are used are of course crystals, rhinestones, bugle beads and sequin. Some times clients will ask what color should they pick. Our general rule of thumb is for darker skins tones go with a light colored gown. Where as for lighter skins tones we usually tend to suggest a darker colored fabric. This adds depth and contrast so that the individuals face will beam through. Yet still, for years now the most popular color of pageant dress has still always been white regarding of skin tone.

In the recent past the Miss USA system along with the teen pageant systems have tried to get their beauty contestants to chose more celebrity styled and less heavily beaded evening wear pieces. While contestants in the Miss America contest appear to be going back to the liquid beaded dresses and fully beaded bodices as girls once did back in the 80s and early 90s. Trends change with the present time. So it was only a issue of time before those totally covered with beading dresses made their way back in to the pageant scene.

Once way to reduce the cost of your formal wear is by seeking sponsors. We at Darius Cordell couture have been asked repeatedly each year to be a sponsor of some sort for pageant girls who are having a hard time financing their entire wardrobe. Keep in mind it is not only about the designer dress to wear in evening gown contest. There is usually a costume or ball gown for talent competition, a garment for on interview and sometimes even a crowing dress. Some ladies will trade advertising in their program book for a price reduction on a dress. Some designers may even provide a young lady with a sponsored dress if they feel it will be worth it for their company in the future say for illustration that competitor has consistently been in the top 5 and is positioned to win the state or national title then a designer or retail store may just provide her with a free dress or even an entire wardrobe, in substitution for magnificent advertising.

In addition to the cost, there is a huge commitment to being fit, healthy and firm with ones self. These ladies spend countless hours making sure their bodies are healthy, that their skin, hair and face are just as beautiful as their internal beauty. Since swim suit is one one of the categories in almost all of the pageant systems, it is imperative that each individual stay in shape.

There is no wonder or surprisal as to the dedication it takes to compete in beauty pageants. Still thousands of young ladies embark these contests on a regular basis and have for many years.

and for quite a long time we have been right there with them producing custom-made pageant wear and talent costumes for individuals from all across the world. We post on our site just a few of those Customer Testimonials for our potential clients to go over and consider prior to purchasing their formal evening wear .

Former Chaplain Providing Housing, Life Skills For African Refugees

LEXINGTON – “I guess you can say that it’s more than a job,” said J.J. White of his rental properties in Lexington that are home to many of town’s growing Somali population.

Managing the properties is a family business shared with his wife, Deanna, and their two children, Joshua, 12, and Jami, 10.

The Whites sometimes eat meals with residents, the children play soccer together and Jami dresses in head scarves.

J.J. has served as a pastor at Lexington’s Berean Church and as a chaplain at Tyson Fresh Meats, Eilers Machine and Welding, and Edeal Farm and Ranch, but is no longer in those positions.

Searching for God’s direction has long been a part of the Whites’ lifestyle, and they believe God guided them to their present business opportunity.

“These are faith ventures, so we are praying them through,” J.J. said of the rentals. “We do see it as ministry. My faith is not a Sunday-only thing. It’s an everyday thing.

“Looking through the eyes of faith, God lined all of this up for me. He took my spiritual gifts of caring for people, loving people, spreading the gospel message and said, ‘It’s OK to stay (in Lexington) because I have another job for you.’”

Challenges include helping refugee residents understand how to live in American culture and with modern technology. Some people previously lived in a grass hut with a dirt floor.

Recently on a sweltering July day, J.J. said he walked in to a 95-degree apartment with the windows closed. He asked the occupants, drenched in sweat, if they wanted the air conditioning on, and he showed them how to set the thermostat.

“It’s the constant training and teaching of simple things,” Deanna said.

Eating at a table, using silverware and a non-communal plate are all foreign concepts, as is cooking on a stove. Other differences include the perception of and treatment of women and handling illness.

Deanna said she once saw a van stop in front of Lexington’s Tri-County Hospital and a group of Somali men exited, followed by an obviously pregnant woman who was left alone as she struggled to walk into the hospital.

“I ran through my door, ran across the street and walked with her. I told the men, ‘Will you please walk with her and stay with her and hold her hand?’” she said.

“It is the mindset that women are less than men. I think that as they see Americans treat women better, they will see how to do things differently,” J.J. said.

J.J. said the first African refugees, mostly from Sudan, arrived in Lexington in 2005 when a meatpacking plant in Norfolk closed. In summer 2007, a “humongous wave” of Somali refugees came and “since then they just kept coming,” Deanna said.

Although Tyson is known for recruiting employees “the Somalis began coming on their own,” J.J. said. He has been told there are at least 2,000 Muslims, many of them Somali, in Lexington.

“They tell us if one family came here, that family told someone else wherever they were,” Deanna said. The message relayed is “Come here, and you’ll have a job.”

Helping individuals find affordable and adequate housing was one of the many topics J.J. dealt with during the five years he worked as a Tyson Foods chaplain, a job he left more than a year ago.

He said the city faced housing issues because apartment living needed to be cleaned up. “Landlords needed to be landlords, and tenants needed to be good tenants,” he said. “I felt the only way to prove my theory was to show people.”

His philosophy is that if given nice housing, tenants will be motivated to keep it up. The goal is to offer rentals that are a step above others, so anyone would find them desirable.

When the opportunity came for the couple to lease with the option to buy the Northwest Apartment Building, Deanna was already managing it. The building has 23 units and an office. Some units are not occupied as the couple work to make improvements.

The Whites have since purchased two other rental properties and have a lease to buy another – a property that was once a convalescent home. The building will be used to provide affordable housing for single men.

J.J. said he had often asked, “How can we help these single guys have affordable living, yet with structure and encouragement?”

He said he didn’t want to make the living arrangements about rules but rather seeks to establish a cooperative lifestyle, with the expectation of a lack of selfishness and unity in mind.

He said faith is not a forced issue, but some of the men, many of whom are Tyson recruits and not Muslim, have requested and welcomed a Bible study.

The Whites also work with tenants on setting budgets, paying off debt and dealing with court issues. J.J. said it is rewarding to see someone who previously was on the run from debt learn how to tackle life’s problems.

“If I could open a women’s house, we would do that,” he said.

Although J.J. said he left being a chaplain to reduce his stress level, he has continued a less formal ministry as a landlord.

“There’s a huge group that has stepped up to the plate and tried to help all the cultures who are here. Until you’ve lived here, you haven’t experienced the full blessing of this group of people.”

J.J. said he is not out to convert Muslims to Christianity, but feels directed to come to understand them and work with them. “At the plant, it got impressed upon me that this is a people group that no one is working with.”

He helped organize the Somali Community Center on Washington Street in downtown Lexington and recently had the satisfaction of seeing two factions of Somalis set aside their differences to join to share resources.

J.J. said some Muslims were “shocked to hear that we are people of prayer.” Now, he gets requests to pray with many of the refugees.

“I would love to see them come to know my savior,” J.J. said. “We have a different belief of who Jesus Christ is.” Muslims view Jesus as a prophet, lesser than the prophet Mohammed.

J.J. said he enjoys talking with people one-on-one. “It does not offend me to sit down with a Muslim and talk. The great thing about faith is I don’t have to beat someone with what I believe. I can have a dialogue. Ultimately, it is not up to me to save them. God can reveal truth to them.”

Adapting to America

J.J. and Deanna White said they have seen several cultural differences between Americans and African refugees who have been moving to Lexington, including how physical ailments are treated.

Deanna said she noticed one of their female teenage tenants was concealing her face, which was not usually covered. She asked about it.

The girl pulled aside the covering on her face to reveal drooping of her mouth and eye on one side of her face and then asked to be taken to the doctor. Her parents were away at work and couldn’t take her.

Deanna was with the girl when the doctor made a diagnosis of Bell’s palsy. When the doctor stepped out of the room the girl told Deanna that she didn’t want to be burned, explaining that was how the condition would be treated by her family during the upcoming weekend.

They would inflict burns on both the inside of her mouth and her face. J.J. White said tribal medical treatments often involve inflicting injury to make the body heal something else. With focus on a new area, the first problem is thought to go away faster.

Deanna asked the girl, “Do they understand they will be in serious trouble and go to jail if they do this?” She told the girl she would tell the doctor.

The doctor agreed to write letters to the girl’s family and school explaining the condition. The letter specifically said that the condition would clear up eventually and was not the girl’s fault.

J.J. said some Somalis believe if someone is ill, they must have done something wrong.

Deanna said she was nervous that weekend, but was relieved when she learned that the family accepted the information and didn’t act out on their original intentions.

J.J. said the girl was fearful because in her culture, people do not disrespect the head of the home.

Sc Tax-Free Holiday Attracts Scrutiny

But as South Carolina struggles with near record-high unemployment and severe state budget cuts that have strapped state agencies, a new committee is looking at ways to change the states tax structure.

Some states also struggling with budget concerns, such as Georgia, already have suspended the back-to-school tax holiday this year as the nation remains mired in economic turmoil.

The S.C. Tax Realignment Commission will recommend that lawmakers narrow the definition of school supplies for the tax holiday.

The states other sales tax holiday for guns, held after Thanksgiving weekend would end under the recommendations.

Shoppers typically save an average of $2.8 million during the back-to-school tax-free weekend, a small percentage of the $2.2 billion in sales tax collections the state raked in last year.

Unintended targets

But cutting formal wear, baby items and other items out of the list doesnt sit well with some business owners who have come to rely on the tax-free weekend for a boost in sales over the past decade.

It would really hurt local businesses, said Dea Baughman, co-owner of K.D.s Treehouse, a childrens organic clothing store on Devine Street. A lot of people right now, with the way the economy is, they are just trying to save every little bit they can.

Independent stores like hers which mainly caters to the pre-school crowd are fighting for every dollar, she said, against national chains that do mass buying and can offer big markdowns.

Angela Hughes, floor supervisor at Bella Vista Bridal & Wedding Boutique on Gervais Street, said many brides-to-be wait for tax-free weekend to save sales tax on a gown.

It saves a whole lot of money if youre getting a $2,000, $3,000 gown, she said.

Without the 7 percent sales tax charged in Richland County, buying next weekend would save shoppers $140 to $210 on gowns at those prices. And the store typically has sales of 10 percent to 40 percent for off-the-rack gowns during the tax-free holiday, Hughes said.

The tax-free weekend also keeps some buyers in state who might otherwise shop in places such as Atlanta or Charlotte, she said.

Removing formal-wear from the list would definitely concern us, she said. Thats a huge chunk of sales.

But wedding dresses, towels and cowboy boots never were the intended target of the tax-free holiday, argues Rep. Chip Limehouse, R-Charleston, who originally introduced the bill. The purpose was to provide tax relief to parents buying backpacks, laptops and crayons as they prepare their children for a new school year.

Limehouse also would support taking bedding, linens and shower curtains off the list. Other items to decorate dorm rooms, such as lamps and rugs, never were included.

Sales starting

Shoppers nationwide are expected to spend about $60 more than last year on back-to-school shopping, shelling out more than $600, according to research from the National Retail Federation. More than half of the shoppers surveyed said they would look for more sales this year, and more than 40 percent said they would buy more generic products this year to save money.

If they spent the entire $600 in South Carolina during tax-free weekend, where much of the state charged 6 percent sales tax, they would save about $36. Some counties, including Richland and Lexington, charge an extra percent in sales tax.

Many stores already offer big sales to consumers as they head into the fall.

The Staples near Harbison Boulevard, for example, was packed with shoppers a week ago as the office supply store advertised savings such as a backpack that was essentially free and a pack of plain paper for 1 cent with mail-in rebates.

A study conducted last year by The State newspaper showed shoppers often could get better savings on back-to-school supplies before and after the tax holiday. But selection of items often was limited as the start of school approached.

Baughman said her store had its back-to-school party Saturday, offering discounts on last years leftover fall and winter clothing. The store will run the same sale during tax-free weekend, but shoppers will get the extra 6 percent off.

The deals are going to be the same, she said. The only difference would be the tax.

In Case You Need A Mens Fancy Gown Costume For A Celebration Night

If you find this an ordeal trying to select an outfit then make it more interesting by asking friends around to help you choose or even make the outfit of your choice. Remember fancy dress parties are fun – so whatever the finished costume looks like it will not really matter because this is fun stuff – just as long as you joined in and participated in making an effort is enough. However should this be a competition for the best turned out person in fancy dress costume – then matters change.

Unique ideas are going to get you noticed and surely put you in the running of claiming the first prize. A little honest cheating may help you take the award of the best dressed person in fancy dress costume. How you ask, well let me tell you, your first move is a little research to find out about the host of the party and their likes and dislikes in music – movies or even Disney characters and take it from there – for example if the party host is a she and loves cuddly bears then Winnie the Pooh it is.

If you need a mens fancy dress costume for a party, for the office or just a fun night at home, here are some great ideas for mens fancy dress that will ensure that you get noticed and admired and you certainly wont look silly.-.Men in Uniform Its not a big secret that women can go nuts over a man in uniform. Just ask the several other guys you meet who are wearing firemen, police, and soldier costumes. Dressing up in uniform is a great way to appear attractive and masculine. Uniforms always make great costumes, whether youre dressing up as a fireman, policeman, soldier, fighter pilot, sailor, etc. Mens fancy dress accessories such as hats, boots, helmets, fake guns and so forth are inexpensive and will add a finishing touch to your outfit. If youre planning on attending a Halloween party with a group of other guys, make sure youre not going to appear as The Village People.

Pop Culture Pop culture has recently given us a lot more choices for mens fancy dress. You can opt to go dressed as a Survivor castaway, with some dirt smeared on your face, sandals, and swimming trunks. This is probably one of the easiest costumes you can assemble. Elvis fancy dress has always been popular but this year it looks as though the most popular costume is to be that of Michael Jackson. Im sure the Elvis fancy dress will make a comeback one day soon!
