The Sneakers That Fit Like Gloves

DALLAS – The footwear may look strange – kind of like gloves for the feet, but they are hot items at athletic shoe stores.

They are designed to create the sense of running while barefoot, but protect the feet from hazards like broken glass and sharp rocks.

“What it does is it stretches out your feet, your toes. People have a hard time getting in them at first because when we wear shoes, our feet are all scrunched together,” Hamlin Jones, a running coach, said.

The line of shoes, which are for running hiking and other fitness activities, is called Five Fingers, because the toes are separated. The people who love them say they are the next best thing to going completely bare.

“What they do is they strengthen your ankles, help with balance and stability,” Jones said.

Supporters of the shoes say it is not new or outrageous. Running shoes are a fairly recent technology, and for most of human history, people ran in minimal shoes if any at all.

Daniel Howell, author of “The Barefoot Book,” believes we were born to run, but without shoes.

“Because a shoe is a cast, and you don’t get to flex and twist and grasp. Your feet can’t do that inside a shoe the way it can when you are barefoot,” he said.

Dr. Kevin Myer, a podiatrist, says medical experts are debating the benefits and drawbacks of barefoot running, but he would rather have his patients wearing the Five Finger shoes than none at all.

“So if you’re gonna wear them, or if you’re going to go straight barefooted, I think the key is you really have got to slowly work your way into this,” Myer said.

Fans of the shoes say you calves will feel tight and hurt at first, and everyone recommends gradually easing into them.

Contained In The Two Shoes Debate

Dear Editor:

The Two Shoes land exchange has recently re-entered the public debate with the publication of a letter sent to the Colorado congressional delegation in support of the land exchange. Once again, Pitkin County received a tongue-lashing for not being a team player.

I feel compelled to share with the public some of the details of the big issue with which Pitkin County has been wrestling: Is the public receiving equal value for this exchange? This question has prompted debate over whether the federal appraisal processes really do provide equality in these exchanges. An examination of the federal processes appraising land exchanges has suggested that not only do the existing standards shortchange the public, but the federal government is possibly subsidizing these exchanges.

When evaluating parcels proposed for exchange, land-management agencies rely on a set of appraisal standards embodied in a document known as The Yellow Book; this document owes its existence to Uncle Sam’s power of eminent domain, or its ability to condemn private property for public benefit. In an eminent-domain situation, a low value is desirable so that the government spends the least amount of money possible when compensating landowners. In a land exchange, the same Yellow Book process is used, but the tables are turned; the landowner pays the least amount of money possible to compensate the government.

Moreover, the Yellow Book prohibits any consideration of the surrounding parcels in the appraisal, even if an adjacent parcel could provide something which increases its value after the exchange, such as access or control. Not only is the public receiving the lowest compensation value for the parcel to be privatized, but the regulations prohibit consideration of the premiums that consolidation with the neighboring parcels might bestow upon it.

The land-management agency will use the low-boy Yellow Book appraisal to determine if the parcels are of equal value. If the agency determines a value inequity, one of two things happens. If the appraisal shows that the public parcel is worth more, the private entity will make a cash-equalization payment to the federal government. If the private parcel is worth more, the private entity will make a cash donation to the federal government based on the private parcel’s extra value. Two bills proposing land exchanges in central Colorado (Two Shoes and the Bear Ranch in Gunnison County) include special language allowing for special treatment of these cash donations as tax benefits, despite the quid pro quo which would normally disqualify them for such benefits.

The proposed legislative language specifies that the new owners of these previously public lands place their new acquisitions under conservation easements. Now, a new set of appraisal standards applies, the IRS standards which govern conservation easement tax benefits. In considering the value of the conservation easement, the Treasury requires the appraisal to consider the parcel in view of the surrounding, contiguous ownership, even though the Yellow Book standards prohibited this same consideration during the land exchange valuation process. The new owners will benefit from the increased value conferred on their new parcels from consolidating them with their old ones and will be able to take a bigger conservation easement deduction. And, because tax returns are confidential, the public will never know the amount of these tax deductions.

So, the public helps to finance the privatization of public lands three times. The first time is in the process determining fair compensation, during which the land-management agency followed the legal and procedural guidelines resulting in the lowest value for which the private beneficiary had to compensate the public. The second is when the proponents take tax deductions for the difference in the value of the exchange parcels. And the third time is when the IRS permits tax deductions for the now greater values donated in the conservation easements.

Based on the process outlined here, a very rough scenario of the proponents’ original proposal to Pitkin County shows the potential for a large eight-figure benefit to the proponents before they even took their conservation easement tax deduction. Since we know some of the figures the open space program has paid for conservation easements in the neighborhood, it’s safe to assume a figure of a few million more for this tax deduction. Subsequent proposals have certainly reduced these figures; but, absent the appraisal Pitkin County was discussing, we can only speculate as to how much more equal the last proposal was.

The debate surrounding these exchanges must include a process that carefully illuminates how value is being determined on both ends. This is the only way to ensure fair exchanges. Without this type of examination, it is too easy to whittle away at the public lands, making it almost impossible to protect the commons for future generations.

A Bronx Cheer For Cheerleading

Competitive cheerleading which, like figure-skating and diving, is decided by judges has been judged not a sport by a judge in Connecticut.

U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill ruled that Quinnipiac College could not eliminate its women’s volleyball team and replace it with the 36-member cheerleading squad to both save money and pump up its Title IX women’s numbers.

The judge ruled that cheerleading might someday be considered a sport, but it is not one now.

“Today, the activity is still too underdeveloped and disorganized to be treated as offering genuine varsity athletic participation opportunities for students,” the judge ruled. So the volleyball players and their coach, who went to court, will be back on the court this fall.

My husband, who covers a range of sports for USA Today including pro football, bull-riding, figure skating and Olympic wrestling, says that an activity can be considered a sport if you have to wear different shoes to participate or no shoes at all.

Thus, beach volleyball, figure skating and synchronized swimming would be considered sports and are for the purposes of the Olympics. But poker, chess or darts would not technically be considered sports, even if there is a World Series of Poker and sportswriters like my husband cover it.

My own opinion is that if your mother had to write checks and drive you all over Kingdom Come to do it, it is a sport.

There are about 3.7 million young people participating in cheering nationwide, according to Varsity, which provides the uniforms and products. And it can cost $2,000 to $3,000 a year to belong to a cheerleading gym, not to mention the cost of camps, competition travel and uniforms.

I know cheerleading moms, and they can be just as over-involved and bedraggled as figure-skating moms.

Personally, I think if the activity is really expensive, it should be considered a sport. Therefore, the Olympics and the NCAA should make a place for ballet dancers, just as they have for equestrians.

(Speaking of which, can something be a sport when an animal does at least half of the work? There is a reason why the Olympics haven’t sanctioned dog-sledding, even though it has been included as a demonstration sport.)

But because cheerleading in college doesn’t have what you would call a regular season or a schedule, it doesn’t qualify as an NCAA sport, even if the participants lift weights and run in the off-season and even if the practices are really, really hard.

I can understand that it is difficult to consider revving up the crowd and creating a home-court advantage a sport, even if you are in danger of breaking your neck doing it.

But the official definition of “sport” gets kind of cloudy when the Olympics add curling and eliminate baseball and softball, and when driving a car OK, driving a car really fast is considered a sport.

Do those NASCAR drivers wear special shoes?

Proper Shoe Creates Blissful Ft

I have worked part time for the Runner’s Roost for the past 15 years. That experience, together with 35 years of running and racing, has given me some insight and familiarity with running shoes that has been useful in our coaching business. I am usually the one who can help with a shoe question. With that in mind, I would like to offer a few general observations about running shoes that might serve as a starting point for selecting the right shoe for you.

Having looked at literally thousands of feet over the past few years, you wouldn’t believe how different everyone’s feet can be. Even your left foot can be significantly different than your right.

Foot types for running-shoe fit are generally classified under one of three types: high arch (sometimes called a rigid foot), no arch or “flat-footed” (sometimes called a flexible foot) or somewhere in-between.

Taking into account arch type, what happens upon foot plant: neutral strike, excessive pronation, supination (under pronation), almost everyone strikes on the outside of the heel. Neutral runners (usually those with high arches, but not always) pronate or roll inward and toe off the forefoot in a neutral position. Excessive pronators roll too much to the medial side, and supinators stay too far to the lateral side of the forefoot. They don’t pronate enough.

In general, those with high arches (rigid foot) and a neutral strike should wear a neutral shoe. Supinators should also wear a neutral shoe and look for one that has at least a semi-curved last to help them pronate more, achieving a better neutral position. Runners with a flatter arch and who pronate excessively need a stability shoe, and in some cases, a “motion control” shoe.

How do you know which shoes are which? Most specialty running stores display their shoes according to function: all the neutral shoes grouped together, all the stability shoes somewhere else, and the motion control shoes hiding clear down at the end. Every shoe company makes more than one shoe in each category, sometimes four or five. The trick is to find a shoe in the right category that best fits your foot. The general properties of a shoe vary from brand to brand, so test out several.

If the shoes are not categorized by function, you can usually tell a stability by looking at the medial (inside) of a shoes arch. If it has gray material, it is usually advertising “stability.” That material is much denser than the rest of the mid-sole and aids in blocking excessive pronation by supporting the arch. Motion control shoes generally have the gray material plus some kind of hard posting on the medial side and feature a straight last. Neutral shoes do not have any of the gray material on the medial side. Two exceptions, Mizuno (they use a different system for stability that features a double wave on the medial side) and Adidas, which has the denser material, but it’s just not gray.

There are many other variables to be considered, and a knowledgeable person at a specialty running store can be a big help. Get some expert help, and the result will be happy feet!

Naots are good too, and Think! shoes

I’m a big believer in Earth shoes. They have a negative heel that takes a little getting used to, but they’re the most comfy shoes I own.

20 Years After An Open, A Coach Tees Up Again

When play gets under way Thursday in the first round of the Senior Open the first United States Golf Association championship to be conducted at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash. Parker will be just plain Rich to his playing partners. He said he would be content being anonymous compared with the threesome of Jay Haas, Nick Price and Hale Irwin, which tees off at 12:50 p.m., two groups after his 12:30 tee time.

After all, it has been 20 years since Parker teed up in the 1990 United States Open, the first and only U.S.G.A. championship he had played until this week.

I dont feel like Im out here playing in the U.S. Open like I did last time, he said. I feel like Im just out here playing in a golf tournament. I couldnt care less whos out here. Im playing with guys I dont know. Theyre like kind of nobodies like I am, so itll be fun, you know.

That Parker was able to shoot a round of 65 in qualifying to earn a spot in the field is one of the many charms of an Open championship. It is a window into how small the golf world is and how minute the differences are between players at the highest levels of a game, with few degrees of separation between a 50-year-old college golf coach and Irwin, a three-time United States Open champion.

Even so, Parker is plotting no competitive comeback, and he labors under no misapprehensions about his game. When Im out here, I feel like I belong here, he said in a phone interview. When Im at home, I feel like I belong at home. The difference is, when Im at home, I have three kids and a wife, so I know I belong at home.

Back when he was trying to play golf for a living, Parkers United States Open experience was at Medinah Country Club, where Irwin won the last of his three Opens. At the time, he was playing on the Hogan Tour (now the Nationwide Tour), teeing it up each week against eventual PGA Tour winners like Tom Lehman and Olin Browne, with whom he played a practice round this week.

After missing the cut at the 1990 Open, and after one final run at the touring pro life in 1994, Parker settled down in Lebanon. He kept his game sharp, winning PGA player of the year honors in Vermont (1997) and New Hampshire (1999) and building the program at Dartmouth into a winner since taking it over in 2006.

But like all athletes who once competed against the best, Parker never lost the desire to test his game again. This time, though, he prepared differently. He was often accompanied at evening practice sessions by his daughters Virginia, 15, a member of the Lebanon High School golf team, and Anna, 12 and his son Trey, 9, a Little League player who shagged practice shots with a baseball glove.

And now that he will be breaking out his game on the big stage, he wants to enjoy the experience more than he did in 1990, when he wore himself out before the event began. His attitude is relaxed. Browne said in a text message that his old friend was still Jack Benny in a crew cut.

I know theres a ton of people in New England who are following this, and this whole thing is awesome, Parker said. If I play good, awesome. If I dont, hey, Im not trying to go to the moon or something. This is golf. It wont be the last time I play.

AN APPEALING PITCH Although this will be something of a home game for the Seattle-born Fred Couples in the Senior Open, there is nothing regional about Coupless appeal as a pitchman. The makers of Ecco shoes have found out that Couples appeals to shoe buyers of all ages and will be using this weeks Open to build on the success they had with him wearing their Golf Street sneakers at the Masters.

Before the Masters, the company had forecast selling 2,000 pairs of the style for the entirety of 2010. The company increased production of the shoes afterward and said that it would deliver close to 100,000 pairs this year in the United States and that it had increased its international projections by tens of thousands of pairs.

WOODS TO PLAY IN OHIO Tiger Woods will play at the W.G.C.-Bridgestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, a tournament he has won three of the four times since Bridgestone assumed sponsorship and four of the previous seven times, played in 1999-2005, when N.E.C. was the sponsor. The tournament runs Aug. 3-8.

Woods, who said he was pleased with most aspects of his play at the British Open at St. Andrews two weeks ago, will try to rediscover his putting touch on the fast greens of the South Course at Firestone.

TEENAGER SHOOTS 57 Bobby Wyatt shot a 57 at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship. Wyatt, who is bound for the University of Alabama, turns 18 this weekend.

Wyatt had 12 birdies, an eagle and five pars on the par-71, 6,628-yard course at the Country Club of Mobile. His birdie putt hung on the lip on the 18th green, and he had to settle for par. Wyatt needed 23 putts total and shot a nine-under-par 26 on the front nine. Wyatt has won the states junior championship the past three years.

Ryo Ishikawas 58 in the final round of the The Crowns tournament on the Japan Tour on May 2 is the lowest score on a major tour. (AP)

Firming Sneakers On The Path?

Skechers Shape-Ups All TerrainThe Skechers Shape-Ups All Terrain toning shoes just seem like a bad idea from the start. Toning shoes are designed to be unstable, that’s what forces your muscles into a greater range of motion and therefore, toning. Trails already do that with unstable surfaces and hills. Trail shoes are typically designed for extra support and extra stability. An unstable trail shoe is an oxymoron.

I received a pair of Skechers Shape-Ups All Terrain from the manufacturer as part of their publicity push towards a Skechers-Leki nordic walking program coming this fall. I think the program is a great idea — I love nordic walking with fitness poles. But these All Terrain shoes are not what I would recommend for trail use.

My biggest beef with them is that they caused me to overpronate from the first step. That can lead to knee pain and plantar fasciitis, both things that can stop a walker cold. The rocker motion in these shoes is not as pronounced as in the original Shape-Ups walking shoes or some of the more aggressive toning shoes such as Chung Shi or MBT. But it’s still there, and for me, that’s a trail accident just waiting to happen.
