Through rain, sleet, snow, state lines

True fans will do just about anything to support their team. And while some of our actions can, admittedly, blur the line between sanity and insanity, the vast majority of us do these things simply because of the sheer joy it brings when team success is attained.
We often hear about the commitment of fans in the NFL, NBA, or MLB but its no different in the WNBA. Even though it has become popular for critics to say that no one watches or cares about the league the people Im going to tell you about all beg to differ.
Im not sure theres a better way to put it the following women exemplify what true fandom is about. They support their team no matter what, travel incredible distances to see them play, and appreciate all the players do to inspire young women everywhere. Theyll cheer on the team when they are playing well and do the exact same thing if theyre struggling. They are unfamiliar with the term, bandwagon fan.
Although the common link is the thousands of miles they travel every year to see their teams play, each story is unique and worthy of praise. While reading, ask yourself if you would do the same thing. Would you put in the time, money, and resources into seeing your favorite team play? Would you do the same if the team was having an off year? Would the return on investment be worthwhile enough?
These women certainly believe it is; and it has changed their lives for the better.
Rhonda Lawson, Corpus Christi, TX
In 2008, Rhonda became the first female Highway Patrol Field Captain for the Texas Department of Public Safety and still continues that role today. Lawson began as a half-season ticket holder with the San Antonio Spurs for a few years largely due to how much she loves the game of basketball. From time to time, shed get asked by Spurs representatives if she would be interested in purchasing San Antonio Silver Stars tickets but never really had much interest.
After a while, the representative said that if Rhonda bought season tickets to the Silver Stars she would have an opportunity to meet all-star Sophia Young. She immediately thought of a friend of hers who has a daughter that plays competitively and is being recruited for the 2014 class. So, she bought one season ticket for the 2009 season and was excited to attend the games with friends and family.
To her delight, she was hooked on the Silver Stars and the WNBA after just one game. I love it! Lawson said on the phone to the ticket representative after her first game. Its exciting and the women have so much skill!
Heres the catch Lawson drives 145 miles each way to attend Silver Stars games.
WNBA games are so much more personable than other events, Lawson said. You feel like youre a part of the team. Theres a whole different environment involved in going to womens sporting events and I wish I had been able to experience the WNBA during its inception. Once you go, youre hooked.
Not surprisingly, Lawson upgraded her 2010 season tickets to two courtside seats.
When Lawson isnt able to attend a game, she gives her tickets to a friend or someone who wants to give their daughters exposure to talented female role models.
Im in a male-dominated field, Lawson said. When I started in 1996, I had just one female role model. I want to support and mentor females in the Highway Patrol and that same feeling carries over with my access to the Silver Stars and the WNBA.
Anytime you drive 145 miles each way to a sporting event, there are bound to be some good stories from the road. In one episode, Lawson was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee that overheated about 60 miles short of San Antonio. Being so close, she wanted nothing more than to go to the game and have a good time. So, she pulled over, let the car cool down, and barely made it to San Antonio in time for the game.
When the game was over, she called AAA and sat in the passenger seat of a tow truck as her car was towed all the way back to Corpus Christi.
Now, thats dedication.
Amy Lugibihl, New York/Chicago
Playing basketball in high school and college, Amy Lugibihl originally hailed from a small farming community in Ohio. She first became a fan of womens professional basketball while working in Chicago in the late 1990s and following the womens ABL. Shortly after the Chicago Condors ceased operations, she moved to New York to work for a client.
During that time, she overheard a co-worker ordering New York Liberty season tickets and decided to do the same. She fell in love with the way womens basketball is played and the Liberty was the closest team to her home.
This was in 1999 and has been a season ticket holder ever since.
Even after moving back to Chicago in 2003, Amy still maintains her season tickets to the Liberty. Sure, it would be more convenient to switch teams or go to Chicago Sky games, but Amys team is New York and thats not about to change.
What makes Amy so unique is her desire to see the Liberty anywhere shes already booked flights to New York to see home games and planned road trips to other cities the Liberty play on the road. You name the city and shes been there to see the Liberty play – Indiana, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, etc. If the Liberty plays, you can count on Amy Lugibihl being in the stands.
The players just seem so accessible and they get that little kids, girls, look up to them, Amy said. But beyond that, theyre genuine, theyre human. They get it.
Kaye Kolbe, Minnesota/Green Bay
Kaye has traveled to all 16 WNBA cities and has owned season tickets to the former Detroit Shock and now to the Minnesota Lynx. She began as a fan in 1998 and ever since then, hasnt been able to get enough.
The year the league started, we gobbled up every article, everything we could find on the league and the players, Kolbe said. We loved the New York Liberty and Teresa Weatherspoon. We loved Phoenix with coach Cheryl Miller and Michelle Timms. We even added all the sports packages to our cable to get more channels with the WNBA.
They saw a few games annually that were televised and stayed up to date with all the latest WNBA happenings. Kaye lived in Wisconsin at the time (and still does) and were hundreds of miles away from seeing a live game. They were ecstatic when they decided to fly to a few different states to see the games in person several times over a couple years.
Then, in 2000, Kolbe flew to Oregon to see the now defunct Portland Fire followed by a series of road trips back and forth to Seattle for five gamesin two citiesin a week.
Car trips were then added in 2002 seeing games in Indiana, Cleveland, and Detroit. They would await the WNBA schedule each year so they could plan road trips to new cities to see new players and old favorites.
Each year, we eagerly awaited the schedule, Kolbe said. Wed pour over each teams dates to come up with a trip that would include the most games with the most diverse opponents in the shortest period. Thats how wed determine our summer vacation plan.
After seeing Deanna Nolan play, she decided to become a season ticket holder to the Detroit Shock the closest WNBA team near her home at the time. A 9 hour drive (on a good day) one way, she relished the opportunity to see the Shock during their memorable championship run in 2008.
Now, while still living in Green Bay, she decided to become a Minnesota Lynx season ticket holder after the Detroit Shock moved to Tulsa. She still makes long road trips every once in a while to different states. And even though going to Lynx home games are a shorter drive in comparison, its still over four hours each way to see them play.
Kaye wouldnt have it any other way.
The WNBA has enriched our lives in many ways, Kolbe said. Not just with the players heart and love of the game but with the travel that following them has inspired. Weve gotten to see the World Trade Center before and after 9/11. Weve celebrated Independence Day in our nations capital, seen the splendor of the American West in Sedona, AZ, experienced true Americana in Seattle at Pikes Market, taken in NASA and experienced the Galveston shoreline in Texas, had Als Hot Beef and an Italian Ice in Chicagos Little Italy, stopped at roadside fruit stands in Michigan and side of the road coffee trailers in Washington state, and even explored museums from the Smithsonian, to the Met, to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Its been somewhat of a cathartic experience for Kaye being able to travel to see the players. She even received a phone call from Katie Smith while she was a member of the Detroit Shock thanking her for being a season ticket holder and letting her know how much the team appreciated her.
In spite of all the traveling, her most memorable moment came sitting at home while watching the 1999 WNBA Finals when Teresa Weatherspoon hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to beat the Houston Comets in Game 2.
I was watching on TV and thinking, its gonna make it, its gonna make it and it went in! Kaye recalled. I went from the couch, to being on my knees, to standing on the couch, to jumping up and down!
Sure, it gets expensive with all the driving and traveling. But the joy and happiness Kaye gets from the WNBA?
Priceless.

It’s late on Sunday when Alex Rodriguez’s 600th Home Run finally agrees to meet in the lobby bar of an unremarkable airport hotel in Tampa, Fla. A week and a half have passed since Mr. Rodriguez, the sleekly handsome New York Yankees superstar, hit his 599th home run, and in that time, the Yankees have played 10 games, and still, The Least Anticipated 600th Dinger of All Time has yet to crawl over an outfield fence. On Sunday, Mr. Rodriguez was given the day off by Yankee manager Joe Girardionly to surface as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, and strike out.
Mr. Rodriguez’s laggard chase has left No. 600 feeling restless, unwanted, defensive, and, apparently, badly in need of inexpensive Scotch. When we arrive, we find him sitting at the hotel bar, reading a tattered copy of Roger Kahn’s “The Boys of Summer” and half-watching Shark Week on TV. He motions toward a wooden stool beside him and tells us to take a seat.
Reuters
Alex Rodriguez after striking out in the eighth inning of Thursday’s game in Cleveland against the Indians.
No. 600: (Lights a Pall Mall.) Whaddaya want to ask, kid?
Wall Street Journal: What’s taking so long?
No. 600: Taking so long? (Grimaces.) That’s your leadoff question? Not exactly an icebreaker, Dick Cavett. (Agitated, he turns to a bartender.) Two more fingers of Famous Grouse! (To WSJ.) You can’t rush greatness. Did they hassle Picasso about Guernica? Calatrava about the Milwaukee Art Museum? Manny Ramirez about his dreads?
WSJ: Didn’t realize it was such an artistic process.
No. 600: Don’t mock me. It’s a processa historic moment that must be carefully considered, manicured, promoted. Alex and I have huddled with our advisers for months, trying to figure out the exact right moment for 600. We’ve talked to Warren Buffett; Madonna; Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary; Alex Trebek; Michael Bubl; Rip Taylor; and now we have Maverick on board. Do you know Maverick?
WSJ: Maverick Carter, LeBron James’s rep?
No. 600: Yes. We really liked what he did with the Miami Heat showcase. Did you see that program on ESPN? Fantastic! The perfect synthesis of excitement, greatness, with the right touch of Dean Martin class. Didn’t everyone love it?
WSJ: Well, not exactly.
No. 600: Bah! A few media killjoys and the whiners in Cleveland objected. That’s why we decided not to do the 600 in Cleveland, by the way.
WSJ: You didn’t want to be hit in Cleveland last week?
No. 600: After the way they abused LeBron? Why reward those ingrate schnooks with one of the great baseball milestones of all time? More Famous Grouse, please! (Signals bartender to refill his drink, takes long sip.) Do you know that only six players have hit 600 homers?
WSJ: Yes, it’s a significant milestone. But there’s a belief that it’s a hollow accomplishment, that nobody cares.
No. 600: Hollow? Nobody cares? Tell that to ESPN, bozo. They’re not breaking into other games to show you Robinson Cano’s at-bats.
WSJ: But people argue that these records are diminished in the steroid era. After all, Alex did admit to
No. 600: (Waves his hand in disgust.) Old news. Why rehash the past? Didn’t Alex help the Yankees win a World Series last year? Hasn’t he repeatedly sacrificed personal glory for his team? Didn’t he move to third base just to accommodate what’s-his-face?
WSJ: Derek Jeter?
No. 600: Oh yeah, right. Derek Jeter. (Smirks.) All I’m saying is, give Alex due credit. This ain’t Dustin Pedroia’s 200th career double we’re talking about here.
WSJ: Do you think Alex has a likability issue?
No. 600: Likability? Who do you think I work for? Michael Lohan? Is Alex Rodriguez kicking back on his porch in Mississippi, holding the Vikings hostage?
WSJ: At the very least, it does appear the pressure is starting to grind at Alex a bit. Girardi sat him down Sunday, gave him the day off, and then he pinch hit and whiffed.
No. 600: That was our decision. Not Joe’s. You think I want to jump over a wall in that soulless frozen orange-juice can they built in St. Petersburg? Blechhh.
WSJ: So you’re implying you control when and where you land. That the 600th is not also up to the opposing pitcher, or pure luck?
No. 600: Yes. That’s what I’m saying. There’s a plan. First, fireworks. Next, free tacos for everyone. Then, Black Eyed Peas concert. Then a few remarks: Bill Clinton, Lewis Lapham, Francis Fukuyama, Yogi Berra. Last, I will sit for an interview with Jim Gray at the Greenwich, Conn., Boys & Girls Club.
WSJ: Don’t you think that’s a little over the top?
No. 600: Oh, sorryare you new around here? That’s the way the sports world works now. Hype rules. Style thumps substance. You don’t even want to know what we have planned for No. 763, when Alex beats Barry Bonds. Let’s just say, four words: James Cameron Space Blimp.
WSJ: First he has to get 600.
No. 600: Relax! What was the great quote from St. Augustine? “Patience is the companion of wisdom.” Are you bored already?
WSJ: A little.
No. 600: You’re pathetica drooling, impatient ADHD spawn of the Twitter generation. I bet you’d open a 2000 Chteau Ausone right now and drink it with a microwave burrito.
WSJ: One last question. What’s Cameron Diaz really like?
No. 600: You know I can’t answer that. It’s personal.
WSJ: Not even a little hint?
No. 600: (Leans forward.) She’s lovely, wondrous. Smells like gardenias and strawberry Mentos.

Aug. 01–Thousands, maybe millions, of softball players around the country dreamed of going to a national tournament this year.
How, then, must the Texas Starz feel, with a national tournament coming to them?
“The national tournament coming to Bryan-College Station, that’s a huge, huge chance for us,” said 14-year-old Erica Russell, who plays shortstop for the Bryan-based team. “Everything I have looked forward to is this week. I made sure I didn’t plan anything this week, that I could hit and field and that I wasn’t injured. I wanted to make sure I was completely ready.”
The Starz will be the only local squad competing in the 160-team USA/ASA 16 & Under Fast Pitch National Championship, which will begin its eight-day run in College Station and Bryan on Sunday. Many of the age group’s top girls softball teams in the country will converge on the area for two rounds of pool play and the ensuing bracket games that will lead to a national final on Aug. 8.
Appearing in the national tournament represents another step for the Starz in a journey that began four years ago, when a group of parents with girls in Little League decided to form a traveling team and the Starz were born. The core of this year’s team has been together since beginning 10-and-under competition in 2006.
“We wanted the girls to be ready to play in high school,” said Jimmy Parker, one of the Starz coaches. “That’s what this team was all about in the beginning, to get them ready for high school.”
Team organizers accelerated the preparation process this summer by moving the Starz up one classification to compete in 16-and-under (16U) even though most of the players were still eligible for 14U. They decided to “play up” for a couple of reasons, including the chance to play nationals at home. The main factor was that 16U rules more closely match high school standards, particularly the 43-foot distance between the pitcher’s rubber and home plate that will be adopted at the high school level next year.
“There’s been some challenges playing 16-and-under, but it’s been all right,” said pitcher and outfielder Haley Parker, 14, who will be a sophomore at Rudder. “The toughest thing is probably just them having more experience. I think we’ve gotten better facing teams that are older and have been playing longer.”
Moving up in division allowed coaches to add a couple of players older than the 14U limit. Most of the Starz are going into their freshman or sophomore years at either Bryan or Rudder. The only player from outside the school district is Cori Drake of North Zulch, who was added this year to fill a need at catcher.
Players who’ve been with the Starz for all or most of the team’s existence include Brittney Jones, Haley Parish, Madison Goolsby, Rebecca Peirce, Hilary Hoffman and Courtney Meier. The other players on the roster are Morgan Isbell, Allison Bessette and Kayla Emery.
The Starz won an ASA 10U state tournament in the fall of 2006 and have produced a couple of other top-5 finishes at state. Most of the players also were on the Bryan Harvey 11-12 all-star team that captured the Little League Texas East state title and played in the Southwest Regional at San Antonio in 2008.
Officials with Texas ASA District 30 chose the Starz to be the host team and receive an automatic berth into the national tournament. The Starz had to compete in the ASA state tourney to be eligible, but did not have to finish among the top three teams to qualify.
The Starz made the top 16 at state, and coaches proudly point out that their players have avoided blowout losses despite playing against mostly older competition.
“We have some tournaments we’ll go to where we’ll lose our first bracket game and get thrown in the losers’ bracket, but we’ll turn around and play a gazillion games and get to the championship,” coach Kevin Russell said. “One of our team moms said this team has ‘it.’ We asked her what ‘it’ is, and she said she didn’t know, but this team has it.”

The Utica Sluggers 16U girls fast-pitch softball team is headed to the national tourney in Dayton, Ohio, after winning their second straight New York State Eastern Regional ASA Tournament Championship at Kost Field in Rome last weekend.
Coach Jerry Albanese is thrilled but a bit surprised his team is in this position.
I knew we were strong enough to compete, he said. Weve been together for three years. To get to this point was a battle. My first year, we had girls who wanted to play but couldnt compete at that level. This year we got a couple of girls who wanted to play and can compete at that level.
The Sluggers will play in the ASA Eastern National Championships Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 4-8. Theyll play two games Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.
Im going to tell the girls weve been here before, we know what we need to do, so just play our game and whatever happens happens, Albanese said.
In the state tournament, the Sluggers defeated Waring Track Heat of Albany, the Oswego Pride, the Attack Extreme of Glens Falls to get to the championship game against the Rochester Lady Lions.
Trailing 3-2, the Sluggers rallied in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Little Falls Jordan Mitchells two-run double put the Sluggers ahead for good en route to the win. Katrina Jones won her second game of the day with a four-hit, one-walk, four strikeout performance.
Pitchers Jones, Bianca Pavia and Brittany Pogoda all have an ERA under 1.00, Albanese said.
No. 7 hitter Alyssa Balfe of Oriskany is the Sluggers top hitter with a .472 batting average. Mitchell is the teams RBIs leader with 28. Balfe and VVSs Stephanie Siriano each have 27 RBIs. Siriano is the second-leading hitter with a .418 average.
Team members are: Tierney Buckley, Delaney Buckley, Alyssa Haddad, Alyssa Balfe, Stephanie Siriano, Nicolina LaBella, Kate Connelly, Cara Mootz, Jordan Mitchell, Bianca Pavia, Brittany Pogoda, Katrina Jones, Jordan Diperna and Marianna Maliani. Head coach Jerry Albanese. Assistant coaches are Dave Scarlino and Dave Haddad.

Games To Hold Boys And Girls Entertained

July 15 saw Arthur start a long crammed stretch of games with their first opponent being Drayton/Moorefield. Despite being short players with only nine the girls came to play and took a 22-8 victory. This was a huge team effort as all nine players hit and got home at one point of the game.
Three days later the girls were once again in action at home but this time taking on Mount Forest. The bats were on fire again that night with once again every player scoring a run. Lots of our many runs came from Lylie, Grace, and Paige batting three for four, Josey who batted four for five and Jess who went a perfect four for four! An unbelievable start to Josey Rooneys pitching career going three up three down and striking out all three! Paige stood on the mound next and also saw three up three down. The girls got the well deserved 24-9 win!
Another three nights passed until their next outing in Palmerston and the girls were up for a challenge. A rough night for the bats saw Arthur only register 11 total hits. The defence held strong keeping the score knotted up and thats how it would be in the end. Arthur held on, refused to go away and finished with a 10-10 tie.
Finally came the second last game in the long stretch which was once again at home against Drayton/Moorefield. Arthur was out there for a win and nothing else and it showed as they took the 19-11 win. Our big cracks of the bat were from Nikita and Gabby who doubled and Paige, Jillian, Grace and Josey! Another notable was Lylie who batted three for three! A special thanks to our call-up Sarah who played another game for us and to Lylie who played while still battling an injury.
The next game for the girls was Wednesday in Mount Forest at 6:30. Come out and support the girls as they edge closer to their tournament! Hope to see you there!
