Two Forms Of Bunk Beds

In a family of many members, a bunk bed can help save space. This is a bed wherein one bed frame is over the other. Thus, two people can sleep in it, one in the first layer and another on the second. For people who are not very fat, more than one can sleep on one layer.

This bed is supported by four pillars. In order to go to the second layer or the second bunk, a ladder is used. The ladder is attached to the two beds. It cannot be moved away since it is already part of the bed.

The top bed must have railings on its surroundings to prevent accidents. A person sleeping on it can fall if he is not careful. People who are always moving even when asleep should not sleep on the top layer of this bed. Moreover, since it is high, kids should not play on the second layer of the bed.

There are two main types of this bed which are being used. First is the standard type. This is used widely by people who want to save space. It has two mattresses with the same size. Both the first and the second layer are occupied for sleeping purposes.

Metal beds have had a bad rap in the past. Check out any horror, asylum or prison movie and youre unlikely to see any warm wooden beds around. Strictly spiky, dangerous and dark metal frames silhouetted against bolts of night time lightning. How unfair!

Well things have changed tremendously. I personally have an affinity for wood. Its immediately more natural and has gained safe status in average bedrooms across the country.

If you have a bedroom with white walls and a light brown carpet, youll easily find a wooden bed to match! Unless youre prepared to spend a lot more money, most wooden bed frames look more or less the same within your wood of choice.

Therein lies a challenge I think. Metal can be tediously functional and obvious, but also famously over the top. Metal bed frames offer a style challenge simply because variety doesnt come at a higher price and contrast can be part of the deal. What will an ornate headboard look like against a white wall and how will that style compliment your whole room?

Buying a metal base that allows different head and foot boards to be fitted will cater for bedroom style changes in the future. Metal bases are also available that adjust for queen and king size mattresses. So versatility can be included in the price!

On a more practical note, metal bunk beds can be employed where economy is required. In childrens bedrooms more space is often needed in a smaller room, so bunk beds can be an option. Safety needs to be considered where children are concerned and youll have to weigh this up against what you know about your childrens habits. Low bunk beds can be purchased if you think there is a risk of children falling off the top bunk. Normally with this type of bunk bed the top bunk is no more than five feet off the floor.

Also be sure not to buy too cheap. Check out a bed frame by applying pressure to it and trying to move it around. If it feels stable under duress then thats a good start. More importantly if you are in the market for a bunkbed check to see it conforms to Consumer Product Safety Commission standards and is labeled accordingly.

Dear Jon,

Its been a while since my last letter. Our break-up was really rough on me; it was so rough that after we broke up, I decided to start dating women for a while. Dont take this the wrong way, but after a year with you I felt an extreme need to cleanse the palette.

Since you work in the media, youve probably seen the coverage of my recent incarceration. The media is treating me, like, Im some sort of criminal. I mean, I guess I did break a few laws or whatever, but I was REALLY TRYING not to.

Its really tough to make these stupid court appearances while shooting a movie. My assistant and my assistants assistant kept telling me I needed to be in L.A. for my court date, but we went clubbing the night before. This creepy guy from the crew kept buying me drinks, so I made out with him for a bit or whatever and the next thing I know its noon and Id missed my flight.

I find it ironic that Im locked up in a cell, but I cant use a cell phone. Omigod, that is so funny! I should totally send that to Dane Cook! Anyway, the only cool thing about jail is that I get to sleep on a bunk bed. My cellmate is a heavy sleeper, so she took the top bunk. When she sleeps on her side, the drool drips down onto my cot. After a few days of this, my cot has turned into a water bed, so thats pretty cool.

My arrest photo is being strewn all over the Internet, and it makes me look like a sunburned cricket! I tried to use the ink from the fingerprint pad for eyeliner but they wouldnt let me.

They gave me Martha Stewarts old cell, which explains why the Wu-Tang symbol has been carved into the wall so many times.

On my first day, Britney and Paris stopped by to cheer me up. Britney made a batch of homemade Mt. Dew with the chunks of crack in it JUST LIKE I LIKE IT! Paris brought a vial of her new perfume, Labor Of Love, which consists of ambergris, mongoose teeth and the sweat collected from the brow of the 8-year-old Nepalese children who sew her overpriced handbags for $1 a day.

Listen to me prattling on! How have you been? The last time I was in Kinston you were working on music and writing about that Paulette woman who still owes me $580 bail money, by the way.

Are people still buying newspapers? I dont understand why people just dont use Twitter; I mean, its free, and you dont have to plow through all of those icky stories about crime, war and the government. Do I really need to know if the guy in charge of the U.S. Treasury didnt pay his taxes? DUH! Rich people dont have to pay taxes who doesnt know that?

This prison food is SO FATTENING! Im now up to 79 pounds! I need to lose some weight but its really hard trying to smuggle a shiv in a rice cake.

OMG!! I just found out my sentence has been reduced to two weeks due to overcrowding! This is fantastic; Ill be out in time to finish filming my part as the bulimic dolphin in the Flipper remake!

Drop me a line the next time youre in L.A.; well hook up at a sushi bar and then go out for seafood!

It was always exciting to walk into a kids bedroom as a child and see those bunk beds. Now that you are deciding if bunk beds are right for your family, keep in mind the benefit to the whole family from the increase in space. Theres just something about creating more space that is just satisfying. More space can give you the impression of breathing easier, and with all of our hectic daily lives we could use a few more deep breathes.

What is it about a bunk bed thats so special? Maybe its the same feeling we used to get when we climbed a tree? How long has it been since you felt that way? Well, imagine the way it will feel to your child every day when you buy them their bunk bed.

There is nothing more convenient than bunk beds. They can be arranged separately, at first, in the same room, to introduce your similarly-aged children to the concept. Then, as they grow, the bunk beds can be set up the traditional way, one on top of the other. Then, as the size of your house grows, the beds can be separated again when the children have their own room. Most bunk beds come with one or two ways to configure their set-up; its up to you to decide which way is best for your family. Involve your children, if you wish. They will take pride in helping to design their room.

The best feature of bunk beds is found during the traditional stacking: what better way to gain 50 percent more space. That found space can be used for whatever you wish-or for nothing at all. We all know that kids have a lot of stuff, naturally, and will find their own way to fill the empty spaces. Please make sure you do your homework; there are lots of different bunk beds to choose from; choose wisely, and your bunk bed can last for many years.

And kids certainly do like their bunk beds, but there are some safety issues that as a parent, you might want to concern yourself with. Each bunk bed that is purchased from a reputable online dealer must pass safety tests certified by the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM). This means that your new bunk bed meets government standards such as placement of the guard rails, ladder specifications, etc.The guard rails are very important, they need to always be attached to the bed, and in their correct position. Please dont adjust or alter the guard rails, they are in a specific position for a purpose and that purpose is to keep your little one safe.

Dont know if bunk beds are for you? Try removing one bed from your childrens room. Once you see the amount of extra space now available, you may decide that bunk beds are for you-and your child. With bunk beds, you get more than extra space; you open up a whole new world for your child. Have fun!

Musings Of A Mad Scientist: It Is An Adventure!

It seems like you guys are getting the lame-o version of my summer. Sorry about that. I’ve done so much stuff it’s hard to cram it in. (And, as my family can tell you, I don’t like to shorten my stories. The long versions are so much more fun!) So, here’s my attempt to describe the adventures we had last weekend.

Last Friday, we set off for Gallup, NM–again. This time, it was for the bi-annual Smith Smith Smith Family Family Family Reunion Reunion Reunion! (I love that you can change the font sizes on this thing.) Yeah, we’re pretty exciting. Our reunion consisted of: eating, doing crafts (one for the kids and one for the adults–I did both :) ), shooting, eating, skits, and eating. I don’t know why, but it’s not an official Smith gathering unless there’s LOTS of food and not nearly enough time to eat it all. Or enough stomach-capacity, for that matter. We had fun just visiting with each other, though. The older girls (16-25–the single ones, of course) slept together in one of the rooms in the cabin/lodge we stayed at. I love my cousins. They’re pretty much awesome. The first night we all wanted to play Uno, so the 6 of us scrunched up on the top bunks of 2 bunk beds (not a very level playing surface) to play until about 1:00 a.m. Fun times.

Just so you all know, I took a total of…6 pictures of the reunion. And all of them were taken on the way home. Apparently I was too lazy to get the camera out. Or I just forgot.

So, the way home was a special adventure. We were driving along, it was raining off and on, and there was fog everywhere, which was cool. Then, traffic suddenly stopped. But, since it was such a nice day (for us desert-dwellers), we didn’t really mind.

But, after nearly 20 minutes of not moving, we started getting…anxious, I guess you could say. And really curious as to why we weren’t moving. After a few more minutes, some lady drove by yelling “The road’s washed out!” to everyone, thereby solving the mystery. Great. So, we flipped a U and decided to go down the control road to get to Payson rather than going the long way around. (Or so I was told–I really don’t know where anything is up there.) Another lady rolled down her window and asked us where we were going, so we told her. Apparently we looked like we knew what we were doing, because she followed us into the forest even though we told her it would probably be a bad road. (Did you notice that awesome foreshadowing there?)

We all trundled along for a while (Seth with his phone/GPS going) and then went left at a fork in the road, passing a sign saying “Primitive road”. Yeah, that was really reassuring. But, we didn’t really want to go the other direction (it was longer), so we decided to risk it.

To sum up: the road was slick and muddy, the lady had 2 kids in her week-old car with her and was therefore understandably freaked out, and she was caught in the middle of our Carpenter/Croft caravan (my sister and brother-in-law and their kids were following us in their car). So, we were pretty much stuck with the consequences of her inexperienced driving. Namely, her getting stuck in the mud on the side of the road and having to find some way to pull her out. (I’m not saying that I would have done any better, of course–I probably would have been about 50 times worse). Thank goodness there were lots of trucks behind us with chains and towing capabilities. There were a few casualties, though. Sarah’s flip-flops:

lots of napkins (thanks Uncle John!), and the cleanliness of our towels and car upholstery. But, none of us got stuck (and the lady was safely bundled up between large trucks after her rescue), so it wasn’t too bad. We decided to say it was an adventure because, let’s face it, it totally was. And it rained almost the whole way home from Payson. Free car wash, baby!

As you can probably guess (and the Guthries know), this is the extremely condensed version of the story. But, it still proves that any outing can be an adventure with a car full of Carpenters. Even going from Heber to Payson. :)

Moms Like Me: Thinking Back On Camp Hochelaga

Independence Day is a day for celebration — parties, pools, fireworks and parades. I love the festivities and typically celebrate with all of the above. This year was a little different because Independence Day coincided with drop-off day at camp for our daughter.

Early in the afternoon, we headed north to Camp Hochelaga, a place that I love. It was my summer camp as a girl growing up in Vermont. I learned to canoe, row and sail there. To this day, whenever I inhale lake water through my nose or smell rubbing alcohol (that was religiously dropped into our ears after swimming), I have a fond flashback to my days at Hochelaga. It seems like yesterday that I was lining up for the nerve wracking swim test at the beginning of my own camp session — the one that determined my swim cap color and the degree of freedom I would enjoy in the lake for the rest of the week. Now each summer I have drop-off and pick-up times to reminisce about my own Hochelaga summers as I watch our daughter make Hochelaga “her camp.”

We arrived at camp at the predetermined time — allowing our daughter and her friend to lay claim to the coveted top bunks in their cabin. I did the necessary parental duties involving paperwork and money. Then I helped my daughter make her bed and watched her unpack. She made herself completely at home in the space of five minutes. I suggested that she get changed into her bathing suit for her swim test. She pulled out her bathing suit and said goodbye.

Goodbye! I couldn’t believe it. It was just a casual, “I’m headed to the lake with my friend now, so you can leave. See you in a week.” What about me? What about my reminiscing time? What about my little girl who wants me to stick around to watch her swim? Apparently, we’re done with that. I guess her week at Hochelaga is hers alone. I’ll have to wait until next week to reminisce again. Then we’ll have a full year to share the memories of our common experiences.

In the meantime, Independence Day it is. My daughter clearly staked hers.

It’s not all bad. I had 30 minutes of freedom, too, as I drove home alone contemplating a week in a house teeming with testosterone. I’m thinking “Hochelaga for Moms” might catch on (minus the seaweed and the ear drops … and the mosquitoes … and the oatmeal … and the skinny bunk beds).

Or, on second thought, I might just need to respect my daughter’s independence and let Hochelaga be hers for now.

New York City’S Illegal Non-Inns

The Web sites show happy young travelers bunking within a few blocks of Broadway. And they offer a place to stay in such a glamorous, expensive city for only $15 a night. The problem is that a growing number of these hotels are unsafe, unsanitary and illegal.

Rogue hotels offer a quick buck for the landlords and a problem for almost everybody else other residents who need affordable housing, the neighborhood that needs stability, the city that loses on hotel taxes and often even the visitor who goes home grumbling.

The Legislature passed a bill this month that finally makes it possible for the city to shut down these hotels permanently. Gov. David Paterson should quickly sign the bill, which was sponsored by State Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, both Democrats from Manhattan. The measure makes it clear that residential buildings are not for transients. Lending your apartment for a month or so while you go away or swapping with somebody in Rome will continue to be legal. But an empty apartment or group of apartments cannot be turned into makeshift hostels.

A report several years ago by the Illegal Hotels Working Group gave examples of how these conversions especially hurt rent-stabilized tenants in lower-income housing. At one uptown apartment building with 120 residential units, the landlord gradually pushed out permanent tenants and replaced them with tourists. The tenants paid about $200-$500 a month. By adding bunk beds, the building owner could get $400 a day.

For such illegal conversions, the city can do little but slap a $500 fine on the landlord. If there are fire hazards, the place could be closed but can reopen quickly if the problem is remedied. Instead of these temporary solutions, this bill would make such conversions clearly illegal. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has urged the governor to sign the bill, as do we. But as he affirms a much-needed change in city law, the governor should also encourage the mayor and his government to make sure young people can find an inexpensive way to bunk in the city. Not everybody can afford a hotel room for $300 a night.
